atching movies as a child is the best. Everything seems so fun, and the deeper, more unsavory aspects of the movie tend to fly over your head. Then you become an adult, and you start to realize what’s really going on.
Here are 10 films that we realized were pretty messed up in hindsight.
1.The Parent Trap
The Parent Trap was such a delightful movie, Disney made it twice. The second one starred a young Lindsey Lohan as a pair of twins who try to reunite the parents who separated them at birth as part of a divorce settlement.
Seriously, who does that? What kind of irresponsible – no, evil parents separate twins. Twins. Not cool at all.
Case in point, there was a famous and reprehensible study where groups of twins and triplets were separated at birth and purposefully adopted into different families. Not surprisingly, many had mental issues and some tragically ended their lives.
2. 50 First Dates
50 First Dates is a sweet romance movie, right? Drew Barrymore plays Lucy Whitmore, a woman with retrograde amnesia who can’t make any new memories and only remembers her life up to a certain point.
This movie is extremely messed up because Lucy literally cannot remember anything that happened the night before. As one Redditor, AhemExcuseMeSir, put it, “I always think about how creepy it would have been to wake up and be like 8 months pregnant. What kind of mind fuck would that be?”
3. 40 Days and 40 Nights
Here’s another early aughts comedy, this one starring Josh Hartnett and Shannyn Sossamon. 40 Days and 40 Nights follows Matt Sullivan, a San Francisco web designer who takes a vow of chastity for Lent to get over a painful breakup.
